These books have been on our shelves for a while, and have become firm favourites. Each one showcases a Black and/or Indigenous voice whether it’s through the eyes of a character in the story, the author themselves or showcasing the diversity of universal experiences. These specific books do not discuss race but just as importantly show what race and diversity look like in a common context.
Just the way we are
A beautiful book about the makeup of different family units. It works to highlight differences that exist in different families but doesn’t show that one is better than the other.
Time to play
This book shows the universality of play amongst different cultures and contexts. It’s a part of a wonderful series of books by Ellen Lawrence that is part of our collection.
In the bush I see
A stunningly illustrated and authored book by Kiara Honeychurch, an Indigenous Australian author describing the wonderful array of animals that make Australia unique.
Thanks Ippy! My fav post of yours so far.
