With the holiday season coming up, many of you will be seeing a lot of family and friends that you don’t see regularly. It’s no different for us this year as we’ll be visiting a lot of family who have never met Havvie before.
So we’ve been trying to come up with ideas of how to support Havvie through what can sometimes be a very overwhelming time with numerous events and new faces. My husband came up with the brilliant idea of printing photos of the family members that Havvie will see so we can make these strangers a bit more familiar for her.
I’ve printed a head shot of every individual Havvie will meet and grouped them into families. I introduced these cards by naming the individuals on each photo one by one, by name and relationship to Havvie (e.g. Uncle Akash). I’ve placed them on her cube shelves amongst her other work. I plan to introduce a new family every few days.
So far she’s enjoying picking them up and naming the people on them. She also seems to gravitate towards certain individuals and is keen on looking at their photos and naming them more than others.
I’ll take these photos with me when we visit these family members so we can use them to name the people she’s seeing. Havvie will be setting the pace in terms of how she wants to settle into these events and I’m hoping this earlier introduction will make the transition a little bit easier.
